The Islamic Charity Fund has donated 32 medical beds to the state-run Home for People with Special Needs (HPSN) in K. Guraidhoo.

The donation was handed over to the Family and Social Development Minister Dr. Aishath Shiham by Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on Wednesday morning.

The medical beds, funded via the charity run by the Islamic Ministry, is valued at MVR 504,000.

At Wednesday’s ceremony, Shaheem said the donation was made at Aishath’s suggestion.

“We are donating these beds to the Home for People with Special Needs in Guraidhoo at the minister’s suggestion. I want to express my appreciation to her,” he said.

Aishath said she was pleased to aid vulnerable communities.

“We are very happy to lend our support to vulnerable groups, to protect their rights. We are also happy with the chance for government ministries to collaborate on such an initiative,” she said.

The shelter in Guraidhoo was originally meant to be a facility for people suffering from severe mental health issues. But over time, it also began taking in the elderly who have no one to take care of them.

The facility currently houses over 190 people.
