School students across the Maldives sang the national anthem on Sunday morning, as schools reopened for the second term after the holidays.
There are currently 84,200 students enrolled in schools across the country. This includes some 73,000 students in 216 public schools. Over 25,000 of the students are based in the greater Male’ area.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had decided last month that all school sessions will begin with the national anthem, in line with his administration’s pledge to revive the spirit of patriotism.
In a press conference announcing his decision in December, President Muizzu said he believes it important that school students are instilled a love for the country, and made to understand what’s said in the national anthem.
He described the decision as a key initiative to build patriotic future citizens.
