President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states that the development of new residential buildings to rehouse the residents Male’ Hiyaa and Sinamale’ flats in Male’ City and suburban Vilimale’ will begin in February, next year.
People began living at the Sinamale’ flats in July 1990. The flats, while more spacious than the flats later built under social housing projects, are now severely rundown.
Redevelopment of the flats had been a project President Muizzu had championed since he served as Male’ City Mayor.
Speaking at the Kangathi Awards on Wednesday night, President Muizzu said he remains deeply concerned about the state of the flats.
He said that the project aims to rehouse the residents without them bearing any costs for the rehousing.
He said that numerous housing projects would be simultaneously planned and implemented throughout the nation during his administration.
“By the end of these five years, there will not be a single Maldivian citizen who will need to suffer due to lack of housing,” he said, promising to provide a permanent solution to the country’s housing crisis.
