Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has expressed grave concern over the United Nations Security Council’s failure to act swiftly and decisively.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine Riad Al-Malki paid a courtesy call to the vice president on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland.
During the meeting, VP Latheef and Minister Al-Malki discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The Vice President affirmed the Maldives’ profound solidarity with the people of Palestine in their struggle to achieve independence. In this trajectory, he underscored that the government of Maldives has condemned the violent attacks and Israeli aggression against the people of Palestine in the strongest terms on multiple occasions.
He reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their legitimate quest for inalienable rights, including self-determination while also expressing expressed grave concern over the Security Council's failure to act swiftly and decisively.
Maldives has held a long-standing position of support to the Palestinian statehood which the island nation established diplomatic relations with on April 4, 1982.
The United States on Friday vetoed a proposed United Nations Security Council demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza; a resolution that was backed by thirteen other members.
