Uwaish taken off ventilator; two remain in ICU

Ali Uwaish, the young entrepreneur who sustained serious injuries in an accident in Male’ City on Wednesday, has been taken off the ventilator and is now breathing on his own.

A spokesperson from Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) told Sun that though Uwaish has been taken off the ventilator, he continues to receive treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The accident took place outside the Villa College campus at around 11:26 pm Wednesday, when two motorbikes collided.

Three people on the motorbikes – two men and one woman – sustained serious injuries in the accident and were taken to the IGMH.

Uwaish, 23, was driving one of the motorbikes, while the other man and the woman were on the other motorbike.

Both Uwaish and the second man are being treated in the ICU, while the woman has been moved to a ward.

Uwaish’s brother, Ahmed Adam previously told Sun that Uwaish sustained injuries to his head and face, despite wearing a helmet. He said that Uwaish also broke his leg in the accident.

According to Ahmed, the accident took place when the other motorbike – heading from Maafannu to Henveiru – crashed into Uwaish’s motorbike – as he attempted to enter the road where Ahmadiyya School is located after coming in from Hulhumale’.

The extent of the injuries sustained by the others are unclear as their families were not immediately available for comment.

Uwaish is the founder of ‘Faseyha Recharge’ a mobile phone recharge app he founded at the age of 17 years. He later expanded into other businesses – including a motorbike rental service and an electronics retail business.
