Male’ mayoral by-election slated for Jan 13

Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the by-election to pick the new Male’ City mayor – a position which became vacant after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned to take office as the Maldivian president – will be held on January 13.

In an appearance on RaajjeTV’s show Raajje Miadhu on Sunday night, EC’s vice chairman Ismail Habeeb said candidacy for the election will be open from November 28-December 13.

Habeeb said that in addition to the Male’ mayoral election, the commission also plans on holding by-elections to elect an official to V. Rakeedhoo Council, and officials to women’s development committees in 18 islands, on January 13.

By-elections to fill three more vacancies at the Male’ City Council will also be held the same day.

The three seats at the Male’ City Council had fallen vacant after councilors resigned to assume positions at the new administration. They are; Abdulla Nasir, who represented South Maafannu constituency; Adam Rameez, who represented Central Henveiru constituency; and Fathimath Shamnaz Ali Saleem, who represented South Henveiru constituency.
