Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has donated MVR 500,000 to the Palestine emergency relief fund opened by the Maldivian Red Crescent.
The donation was presented to MRC’s general secretary Fathimath Himya by MPL’s CEO Shahid Ali on Monday.
MPL said they and their employees remained committed to assisting Palestinians. The company said it planned on setting up donation boxes at the Male’ Commercial Port.
The MRC launched an emergency appeal for donations to support the response and relief efforts carried out by Palestine Red Crescent two weeks back.
Since then, it has received MVR 1.6 million in donations.
According to MRC, the donations will support the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, such as provision of first aid and medical services, fuel and essential supplies, transfer of the sick and wounded, provision of clean water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, basic relief items including food, clothing, and household essentials, and protection and community engagement to the most vulnerable.
The Palestinian struggle is deeply felt by Maldives and the rest of the Muslim Ummah.
Humanitarian agencies, NGOs, companies and private citizens have been engaging in various efforts to raise funds to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza, as Israel intensifies its attacks.
Over 8,300 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza – most of them women and children.
More than 1.4 million people have been displaced.
