Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, on Sunday night, has met with the party’s members.
Sun has learned that Sunday night’s meeting took place at PPM headquarters. The meeting was attended by PPM members loyal to him.
Sun has also learned that Yameen, during the meeting, had announced his decision to meet with the public in a mass gathering.
A PPM member who took part in the meeting told Sun that Yameen had assured to undertake all efforts necessary to uphold the incoming administration and spoke on the current state of the economy.
While PPM has yet to make a statement regarding the meeting, photos circulating show PPM-PNC’s leadership to have taken part in the meeting.
The meeting comes after Yameen, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison for money laundering and bribery charges in connection to the sale of V. Aarah on December 26, 2022, was granted easement to terms of his home confinement by the Maldives Correctional Service on Friday.
He was transferred from his cell in Maafushi Prison to his home in Male’ City on October 1 – a day after PPM-PNC’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the Maldivian presidential election, after almost a year in prison.
The transfer came following an appeal made by Muizzu in a press conference after it became clear he had won the election.
Yameen’s conviction is being appealed at the High Court.
