The Maldives needs a leader who would honestly and enthusiastically work for the development of the nation, and not just think about ruling, says Ahmed Siyam Mohammed, the Interim Leader of the newly formed political party, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
Siyam’s statements came in its first rally after its registration, in the island of Velidhoo, Noonu Atoll.
Siyam said that the reason why the hopes of the Maldivian people have gone into ruin is that those who are there to lead only wish to rule.
Siyam said that a person who is vying for political power must have in his mind a program for national development. He also said that leaders should not think that leaders are the nation, and that they should see national development as their personal interest.
“Education, health services, transport and trade in the atolls are similar to the situation when we were children. We now desperately need a political party, a leadership which can change this situation”, said Siyam.
Siyam also said that there “definitely are some political parties which are only interested in the power and influence of their leaders”. He also said that there people who wish that the voices of only two or three parties should reach the people. These are the reasons for the frustration of the people, according to Siyam.
Siyam also noted that the fewer the number of people who should speak on behalf of the people, the stronger the dictatorship over them would be. He also said that the silence of the people is the food for oppression as shown by history, and that the Maldivian people cannot afford to hush their voices and go into silence.
MDA’s team to Velidhoo was warmly greeted by MDA Velidhoo Branch. A special welcome event was conducted at the harbor area of the island, and the whole island was decorated in orange, MDA’s official color.
Mohammed Waseem, Island Councilor for Fodhdhoo, Noonu Atoll, signed for MDA during the rally held last night.
Apart from Leader Siyam, MP Ahmed Amir, Ali Mauroof, and Aishath Rafiyya, the three Deputy Leaders of MDA, also spoke at last night’s rally. In addition, a number of party Council Members and citizens from Velidhoo also spoke at the rally.
After the rally, MDA’s first branch in the atolls was officially opened at Velidhoo.
