Elections Commission (EC) has stated a parliamentary by-election for Faresmaathoda constituency will not be held.
Faresmaathoda seat in the parliament will become vacant once incumbent Faresmaathoda MP Hussain Mohamed Latheef (Sembe), president-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s running mate, takes oath as the vice president of Maldives in November.
EC’s Vice President Ismail Habeeb in a tweet on Friday said the law clearly states the course of action under such circumstances.
In this regard, the law states that a new member must be elected to a parliamentary seat becoming vacant within 60 days from the date the seat becomes vacant.
However, the law states a member should not be elected for a vacant seat if there are only six months or less between the date the seat becomes vacant and the next parliamentary election.
The last parliamentary election held in 2019, took place in April. EC has previously stated they were working on holding next year’s parliamentary election in April.
