Lh. Naifaru, which floods everytime it rains, has had their streets flooded with water for the past three days as per Naifaru council.
Speaking to Sun, Naifaru council president Mohamed Rasheed said today that the island has seen heavy rain for about three days now and so a major part of the island has been flooded due to that.
“This is the third day of continuous drainage. Four pumps are being used to pump the flooded water from different parts of the island into the sea," Rasheed said.
Rasheed said that two houses were flooded but no damage was reported so far.
“Unlike other times, it has been raining very heavily for a long time. That is why we are having difficulties in draining the water,” he said.
The residents are working with the council to drain the water and the army is also assisting them, he said.
When it is stormy with heavy rains in Naifaru, the roads are always flooded because there is no drainage system in the island, Rasheed has said previously.
He further said that the drainage system will be installed under the road construction project and that the project has been under discussion for three years.
He said one of the biggest reasons for the delay in the road construction project is tha the water and sewerage system is still incomplete. Although the project is completed, some households do not get the service at all. Therefore, the road has to be dug from time to time, he said.
