President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to solve the shortage of teachers, which he described as the biggest issue facing the Maldivian education sector.

He made the remark in an address on Thursday, on occasion of the World Teachers’ Day.

In his address, Muizzu said the incoming administration will solve the shortage of teachers, and will solve the question of whether Maldivian school leavers have the capabilities the country needs – a top priority.

Muizzu said he plans implementing policies to run refresher programs for teachers, give priority to their physical and mental wellbeing, offer them a proper work-life balance.

He promised to shape an administrative structure that upholds the stature of the hard work of teacher, and raise the honor and prestige of teachers in society.

In order to ensure that school leavers have the capabilities this country needs, I will make it a special priority to foster the intelligence and sharpness, the capabilities, and the ethics a student of the 21st century needs, he said.

Muizzu said that students will be shaped to respect societal values, and love the country they are born in.

He said he plans on amending the curriculum to foster the values.
