Muizzu pledges to make Maamilgi port feasible again

Supporters welcome opposition PPM-PNC presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to ADh. Maamigili.

Opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, noting the ADh. Maamigili port project initiated during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s administration had been stopped by the current administration, has pledged make the port feasible again, if elected.

Muizzu, in his ongoing campaign tour of the atolls, visited Maamgili on Monday evening.

Speaking to supporters at the island, Muizzu pledged fast-paced development if elected, as he said was done in Yameen’s administration.

“The people now want fast-paced development. The residents of this island surely want this. We can feel it,” he said.

Muizzu, as a first thing, said roads, in such a big island as Maamigili, should not be in the condition it is presently in. He pointed out the road development project at the island, despite commencement, has been stalled over a long period of time. He pledged to finish the project at a fast pace, if elected.

He also provided assurance to the residents of resuming port services on the island, citing the service, launched during Yameen’s administration, has been stopped by the current administration according to the residents. On this note, he pledged to make the port feasible again.

Maamgili port was awarded to Maldives Port Limited (MPL) during Yameen’s administration on June 28, 2017. Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, in 2021, said the government annually incurred a loss of MVR 8 million due to the port.

The opposition presidential candidate also pledged to strengthen the healthcare system in Maamigli by developing a good quality hospital, in addition to establishing a bank branch and campus of either Maldives National University (MNU) or Islamic University of the Maldives (IUM) on the island.
