Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, who is also the campaign spokesperson of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s campaign, on Thursday, has revealed the decrease in the number of crimes during this administration in comparison to former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s administration.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Mariya disclosed the number of crimes reported during both administrations.
While 5,587 cases of violence were reported during former president Yameen’s administration – only 2,777 cases of violence were reported during this administration. 3,808 cases of robbery were reported during Yameen’s administration, while only 1,785 cases of robbery were reported during this administration.
During Yameen’s administration, 1,563 cases of domestic violence, 2,838 cases of sexual assault and 24,146 cases of theft were reported. The numbers in this administration are lower – with 1,096 cases of domestic violence, 1,732 cases of sexual assault and 18,748 cases of theft.
3,071 cases of vandalism were reported in Yameen’s administration while only 2,174 cases of vandalism were reported during this administration.
Mariya mostly emphasized the lower number of deaths resulting from violence. 41 deaths arising from violence were recorded during Yameen’s administration, while the number stands at seven during the current term, she said.
“Therewith, we have undertaken a lot of important work in establishing law and order in the Maldives,” she added.
Mariya said the work was carried out under President Solih’s campaign slogan, ‘Happy and Peaceful Maldives’. She stressed it was why President Solih needed to be reelected for a second term.
