Muizzu receives red-carpet welcome from home island of Vashafaru

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate of the opposition PPM-PNC coalition, received a red-carpet welcome from his island of HA. Vashafaru on Monday, as he continues his campaign tour of the Bodu Thiladhunmathi region.

Scores of people from Vashafaru, an island of around 900 people, gathered at the island’s harbor to welcome the Male’ city mayor.

He stepped off his speedboat onto a red carpet, and to chants of “Vashafaru Muizzu in one round!”

Muizzu’s father, Sheikh Hussain Abdul Rahman was from Vashafaru. He died aged 71 in 2015.

Muizzu said he felt overwhelmed with emotion upon arrival in Vashafaru. He thanked the people of the island for the warm welcome he received.

In his address, Muizzu said islands should be developed irrespective of the size of population.

He said that all Maldivian citizens, in any island, were equal.

“In Sha Allah, I will achieve the development of this island, and everything the people of this island desire,” he said.

Muizzu said that a project to build a city hotel in the island, which he said has been stalled, will be complete within the first six months of his administration.

He said the main purpose of the hotel is to create more jobs.

He also pledged to run a land reclamation project and a coastal protection project in the island.
