Main opposition party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Monday kicked off door-to-door campaigns in Male’ City.
The campaigns are to garner support for the party’s candidate in the upcoming Presidential Elections, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, who is currently serving 11-year prison term for money laundering.
Prior to starting off, PPM’s leadership met with the campaign teams, and inquired about questions and areas to collect information on was also decided.
In addition to this, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, who is in charge of the Progressive Coalition’s activities met and shared information with the press ahead of the activities starting.
As per Abdul Raheem, with this campaign, they will find out areas of concern and the current situation for the public. He added that they will also find out about important aspects in order for Yameen to create his manifesto, as well as things people want included in it.
Moreover, he called on people to share their sentiments with PPM’s teams during their visit to homes, regardless of their political views.
Noting that the development brought during Yameen’s tenure was well received by the people, Abdul Raheem said that there is an sense of lacking felt by his absence as the campaign efforts are starting off.
However, he reaffirmed that the activities carried out by the coalition would not slow down, and that they will move forward in accordance with the guidance from Yameen.
“The people do not want to think about where President Yameen is. They are ready to bring him to rule.
Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison on December 25, 2022, after he was found guilty of money laundering and bribery in connection to the sale of V. Aarah – a case linked to the greater MMPRC graft case.
