A protestor has been arrested from one of the serial demonstrations by the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in Male’ City, for biting the hand of a police officer.

The protestor, a 20-year-old woman, was arrested from the demonstration outside the PPM headquarters on Saturday.

She is accused of engaging in violence and obstructing the police from performing their duties.

The Criminal Court extended her remand by five days on Sunday.

The young woman, who has been repeatedly arrested from protests, is suspected of biting the hand of a police officer.

Two police officers gave statements that she bit the hand of a police officer while resisting arrest.

She denies the allegation.

PPM has been holding nightly protests in Male’ City since the party’s leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was jailed for money laundering and bribery in December 2022.

Protesters have been accused of disrupting and deliberately blocking the traffic in the Artificial Beach area where the party’s headquarters is located.

Five protesters have been charged with obstructing the president’s motorcade back in March.
