The shortage of teachers at Gaafu Alifu Atoll Education Centre has enraged parents of students enrolled at the school.

Gaafu Alifu Atoll School, based in Villingili, is facing a prominent shortage of A’ Level teachers. A parent who spoke to Sun from the island reported that the school is short of four teachers as the A’ Level examination nears.

As per the parent, the school did not manage to recruit a replacement account teacher after the previous teacher left the school in February. Meanwhile, the chemistry teacher remains on maternity leave whereas there is no replacement teacher for the subject.

“Has been months since the biology teacher also gave birth,” the parent added.

The parent further stated that the school’s mathematics teacher had suddenly ‘disappeared’ last week. Sun has learned that the teacher was deported over an issue.

Parents from the school report that the school and its Parents Teachers Association (PTA) undertake significant efforts to recruit replacement teachers which so far have been unsuccessful.

“We do not want the twelve-year worth of work by our children to go to waste,” the parents stated as their main concern.

Sun has been unable to obtain a comment from Education Ministry regarding the matter.  Th. Madifushi School parents also protested on Wednesday over shortage of teachers at the school.
