Maldives among first to receive aid under UN 'Early Warning for All' initiative

Maldives is among the first countries to receive assistance under the United Nations ‘Early Warning for All’ action plan.

The plan, launched at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, aims to ensure that everyone is protected with early warning systems for disasters by 2027.

The plan was launched at the COP27 summit last year.

Maldives is among the 30 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that will be the first to receive assistance under the initiative.

Under the initiative, countries will receive assistance from international experts to increase capacity for disaster management.

The first work under the initiative will be to identify the differences in disaster management between countries, and the areas where technical expertise is required, and availability of disaster management resources.

The implementation of the plan will be tracked by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

The plan comes amid increased disasters linked with climate change.

WMO warns failure to take proper action to reduce disasters will result in 560 disasters per year by 2030.
