Male’ City Council has inaugurated ‘Smart Streetlight’ project in partnership with China’s Yunan Province.

The project was inaugurated during a special ceremony at the Artificial Beach area on Monday evening by Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohame Muizzu and Yunan Province’s Head of Delegation Zhouzin.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Muizzu, describing the project as of great importance, said the smart streetlights were a gift from Yunan Province following discussions Male’ City Council held with them

Under this project, 10 smart streetlight poles have been installed from Artificial Beach to Lonuziyaaraiy Park.

The poles will first be installed on main roads, and later on inner roads.

Speaking regarding the smart streetlights – Mayor Muizzu said that they are equipped with free Wi-Fi, digital LED screens, speaker systems, CCTV cameras and environment sensors to detect changes in weather.

As per the mayor, the purpose of the streetlights is for the conveyance of public messages required by the council and important community messages in addition to transmitting religious instructions, advice and Duas.

Noting the Council’s intention to allow commercial advertisements through the streetlights in the near future – Mayor Muizzu said the relevant regulations would be drafted and publicized.

The mayor also detailed that Male’ City Council will have full control over the CCTV cameras – whereas the feed would be monitored through the council's CCTV monitoring system. Similar to the present, Mayor Muizzu said that the recorded feed will be shared with the police for circumstances that calls for it. He stressed that the aim was to ensure Male’ City was a safe place.

Mayor Muizzu expressed hope for the project to proceed as planned while receiving the required assistance. He also thanked Yunan Province for their assistance in addition to the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Governor.

The ‘Smart Streetlight’ project inaugurated on Monday falls under the ‘Digital Male’ City’ project of the council's strategic action plan in its fourth session.
