Jumhoory Party’s (JP) council member Ahmed Sameer who also serves as a minister at the President’s Office has resigned from the party following its decision to contest in this year’s presidential election.
JP’s council, during a convening on Tuesday, approved the recommendation made during the party’s congress to contest in the upcoming presidential election with the votes of 47 council members from 49. Sameer had tendered his resignation during the convening.
Speaking to Sun regarding the matter, Sameer said he decided to resign from the party as he had already pledged support for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the upcoming presidential elections much earlier.
Therewith, he said it was not right to be part of a political party producing its own candidate for the presidential election while he has already pledged support for President Solih.
JP decided to contest the presidential election after they were extended an invitation to form a coalition with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) by President Solih.
