A suspect remanded in custody of police for 15 days has been fined MVR 21,600 for fleeing the police station where he was being held.

Azif Abdul Haleem, M. Hissaa, had his remand extended by 15 days when presented before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on September 8, 2022.

However, he had broken out of the Vilimale’ Police Station where he was being held.

Azif was charged with escaping criminal detention.

He pled guilty to the charge.

The charge carries a minimum sentence of four months and 24 days in prison. However, in light of his confession, the Criminal Court issued a reduced sentence of three months and 18 days in prison Tuesday.

Azif asked for the prison sentence to be converted to a fine, which the prosecution did not object to.

Judge Adam Mohamed therefore converted the sentence to a MVR 21,600 fine.

Azif is required to pay the fine within 12 months.
