A man from L. Gan has been sentenced to prison for brandishing a blade and threatening to “cut up” a policeman along with his infant child.
The incident took place at around 01:30 pm on April 18, outside a mosque in the Maafannu district of Male’ City.
The policeman was waiting outside the Masjid Sultan Hassan Izzudheen, also known as the Thaiba Mosque, with his 11-month infant in a carrier when Mohamed Rizsan approached them, grabbed the baby carrier, and threatened them, saying “you both are so close to each other right? I will cut up both of you together”.
Rizsan was also accused of carrying the blade of a box cutter during the confrontation.
He was charged with possession of a sharp instrument in public without an acceptable reason, and threatening to kill or cause bodily harm.
Rizsan pled guilty to both charges under a plea deal with the state, which resulted in him being given a lesser sentence.
The Criminal Court delivered its verdict on December 4.
The court found him guilty based on his confession and sentenced him to six months in prison on the possession charge and one year and six months for threatening the policeman and his child.
His two-and-a-half year sentence was adjusted for time served, leaving him with 11 months and 13 days left to serve.
