Qasim refuses to disclose details of meeting with president

Jumhoory Party’s (JP)  leader, Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim states that he does not wish to disclose any details regarding his meeting with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday morning as of yet.

Qasim visited the President’s Office at approximately 11:00am this morning, He exited the building at approximately 12:30pm – where the press hounded him.

Reporters inquired from Qasim regarding the discussions that were held with the President. However, JP’s leader refused to disclose any details.

“I do not wish to disclose details of any proposals I had offered. The day to disclose the information to you all has not arrived yet. It is my own decision, whether to speak regarding it or not,” he said.

When repeatedly questioned by the reporters – Qasim said that he had not closed any deals with the president.

He also refuted to comment regarding the upcoming presidential elections – only remarking that a final decision is in the hands of JP’s council.

However, Sun has learned that Qasim met with President Solih regarding the invitation he had extended on continuing their existing coalition for this year’s presidential elections.

During JP’s fourth congress held over the past weekend – the members unanimously voted to approve a recommendation to the party council to produce a candidate from the party to contest in this year’s presidential elections.

However, a formal decision on the presidential election will be made by the party’s council.

Speaking in the congress – Qasim had indirectly criticized the government and President Solih while immensely praising Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed, who lost the contentious MDP’s presidential primary to President Solih, has been lobbying for Qasim to contest the presidential elections citing it was a “golden opportunity” for him.
