Jumhoory Party’s (JP)  leader, Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim, on Wednesday morning, visited the President’s Office to meet President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Although Qasim’s visit has been confirmed – no further details regarding the meeting have been confirmed by any party in an official capacity.

However, Sun has learned that Qasim met with President Solih regarding the invitation he had extended on continuing their existing coalition for this year’s presidential elections.

During JP’s fourth congress held over the past weekend – the members unanimously voted to approve a recommendation to the party council to produce a candidate from the party to contest in this year’s presidential elections.

However, a formal decision on the presidential election will be made by the party’s council.

Speaking in the congress – Qasim had indirectly criticized the government and President Solih while immensely praising Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed, who lost the contentious MDP’s presidential primary to President Solih, has been lobbying for Qasim to contest the presidential elections citing it was a “golden opportunity” for him.
