Police spot check helmet-wearing drivers in inner roads

Police have begun conducting spot checks on people found driving vehicles with helmets on in areas where helmets aren’t mandatory.

In a statement Sunday, police said they had noticed a rise in the use of helmets to disguise appearance in the commission of crimes.

“Therefore, the police will monitor people found driving vehicles with their helmets on in areas where helmets aren’t mandatory, and stop and search drivers found suspicious,” said the police.

According to regulations, helmets are mandatory for people driving, and on the backseat of A1 and A0 category vehicles, in areas where the speed limit is above 30 kilometers.

The decision by the police comes amid a rise in acts of intimidation, muggings, robberies, and assault where criminals use helmets and facemasks to disguise their identity.

On Friday, two men wearing helmets and masks vandalized Juice Time, a coffee stand in Hulhumale’, using hammers, causing massive damages.
