The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) are the only political parties in Maldives that are free of internal strife and remain united, states PNC deputy leader, Maavah MP Mohamed Saeed.

He made the remark during a rally Sunday night.

Speaking at the rally, Saeed said that all the major political parties expect for the PPM-PNC coalition were deeply divided.

“All political parties in Maldives are divided. Political parties have started infighting. PPM and PNC are the only parties that aren’t engaged in infighting and remain united,” he said.

Saeed said that the entire opposition coalition remains united behind former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

“We will not get divided. We, In Sha Allah, are not willing to return home without freeing President Yameen and reinstating him to power,” he said.

Saeed said that the coalition’s biggest achievement is the general members who support the coalition’s ideology. He said that the coalition is being run with the counsel from its general members.

This is what President Yameen instructed, he said.

Saeed’s criticism was directed at the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which has been getting increasingly divided due to differences between President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP’s leader and Parliament speaker, former president Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking at the rally, PNC’s leader Abdul Raheem Abdulla said President Solih’s administration had nothing to show for its first term, as they ask the people to elect them to a second term.

He said that it was why speeches at the ceremony held last Friday to present President Solih with MDP’s presidential ticket focused solely on Yameen’s administration.

“As they near the end of their five-year term, they have nothing to offer to the people to ask for an additional five years. Because they have nothing, they talk about the previous administration. The former administration, President Yameen – these are the only phrases they have,” he said.

Abdul Raheem said that PPM, in contrast, had achieved much during its administration.
