A social media campaign has been launched calling to elect former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom’s elder son, and MRM member Faris Mausoom to presidency in the election scheduled for this year.
Various posts in support of Faris, who previously served as parliamentarian, publicized on different social media platforms has gone viral at present. Accounts and pages calling to elect Faris as president have been also been created on social media platforms.
Many posts on Twitter contained the tag ‘Faris2023’ and ‘FarisForPresident’.
Some of the posts read that it was Faris who stood up to defend the rights of people previously, adding he is the person who can reform the country again.

Faris has yet to make an official statement regarding contesting in this year’s presidential election. His representative party, MRM, has also yet to make a decision regarding the presidential election.
Faris actively participated in campaigns to elect the current administration, often leading. This was after Faris, and his father Maumoon stood up against the former administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom mid-term.
The only confirmed candidates for this year’s presidential elections are President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on MDP’s ticket, Yameen on opposition PPM-PNC coalition’s ticket, Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim on MNP’s ticket, and former Home Minister Umar Naseer.
