The man who stole MVR 25 in a break-in at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) headquarters last year has been sentenced to three months in prison.
The break-in took place on August 8, 2022.
Mohamed Aslam, 30, Dhekula’araage, S. Hithadhoo, stole MVR 25 in cash in the break-in.
He was charged with trespass and destruction of property.
He pled guilty to both charges and told the Criminal Court that he committed the crime under the influence of drugs.
He was sentenced to total four months in prison for both charges on Tuesday.
Aslam had committed the crime less than a month after he was paroled – on July 19, 2022 – after serving a large part of an eight-year prison term for a prior offense.
Police told the court he had stolen from both the Maldivian Airlines’ office and Juvenile Court building before he broke into MIRA headquarters.
Aslam told the court he was a drug addict, and committed the theft after he relapsed after meeting his old friends upon being released on parole.
