Fight breaks out at Maafushi Prison, injuring one

A fight broke out among inmates at the Maafushi Prison on Saturday, leaving one inmate injured.

The incident was reported to police on Saturday evening.

According to a police spokesperson, the inmate injured in the incident sustained a split lip.

There were no other major injuries, according to police.

“There is no evidence of the use of sharp-edged weapons in the incident,” said the spokesperson, refuting rumors inmates were stabbed in the incident.

Maldives Correctional Service’s spokesperson Aminath Yusreen Ahmed told Sun the fight broke out between two inmates.

Prison guards intervened to stop the fight, she said.

“The injured inmate was transferred to Male’ and is being treated at the IGMH. His condition is not serious,” she said.

The incident is under investigation by police.
