Corrections: Most jailed in drug related cases in November

Statistics from Maldives Correctional Services revealed that drug-related cases were the cause for the highest number of arrests made during November.

According to the figures, while a total of 76 people were jailed in November, 58 of them have been sentenced. Meanwhile, 18 remain jailed for an unspecified duration.

Out of those detained, 62.1 percent of them were for various drug-related cases.

The second highest number of detentions was for theft and mugging-related charges, while number three on the list was trespassing.

These were followed by cases of intimidation, sexual abuse of children, fraud and intermarital sexual relations.

Statistics from Corrections also revealed that during November 41 people were released from jail. This includes 19 who completed their sentence, 15 who were released after the dismissal under a court order to arrest, and five under clemency.

Furthermore, there were releases under parole and dismissal of their sentence.  

Looking at illegal items smuggled into the jail, Correction’s statistics show that many such things were seized within Maafushi Prison. The items include six phones, 24 sim cards, three phone chargers and three headphones.

In addition to this, six phones and one charger were seized from Asseryri Prison.
