A symposium has been held on introducing a deep sea water utilization system in the Maldives.
The symposium, held in Paradise Island Resort yesterday, was organized by Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism (BOCM) of Japan which aids projects on the production of environment-friendly energy. Japanese company Hitachi also presented some of their environment-friendly products.
Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) is set to be the local implementation agency of the deep sea water utilization project along with the assistance of BOCM.
Attending the symposium, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shafeeu said that the introduction of the “deep water cooling system” will lessen fishermen’s dependency on diesel, which is the main source currently used to cool fish and to keep it fresh. The project is planned to be carried out jointly by Hitachi and the Japanese government.
“We can significantly reduce our dependency on diesel when we start using the deep water cooling system. The Maldives fisheries sector will benefit from this project immensely,” said the Minister.
MWSC said this project will facilitate the reduction of electricity usage by as much as 60 percent, along with a significant reduction in the emission of environment unfriendly gases.
