The National Council of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed to overthrow the government of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik by staging an uprising.
MDP said that this decision was made today with thirty votes in favour of the resolution submitted in this regard, at a Council meeting held in Kulhudhuffushi today.
Henveiru-south MP Hamid Abdul Ghafoor told Sun Online in an interview that the National Council made this decision because MDP believes that President Dr Mohamed Waheed’s government came to power by staging a coup.
He said that even though MDP earlier said that the government cannot be brought down through street protests, the situation is now different.
He said that it was also passed to appoint a five-member Committee to work on facilitating the uprising.
This resolution was submitted to the National Council by Mahchangolhi-south MP Mariya Ahmed Didi. It was supported by Hithadhoo-north MP Mohamed Aslam.
Even though MDP claims that President Waheed’s coalition government is illegal, the report publicised by the Commission of National Inquiry after investigations said that the change of government was constitutional.
