Changes have been made to the policies on issuance of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards used in mobile phone services.
Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) announced the changes in an announcement on the Government Gazette on Wednesday.
According to the changes, SIM cards will be in a non-activated status prior to issuance to customers, and will only be activated once the service provider gets full information from the customer to whom the card is issued.
The changes are set to take effect on Thursday, December 1.
According to CAM, the changes are part of the efforts to tackle a rise in cybercrime.
