An officer from Maldives Correctional Service has been arrested trying to smuggle drugs into a prison.
In a tweet on Monday, Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu said the arrest was made in a joint operation between Maldives Correctional Service and Maldives Police Service in response to suspicion the officer was involved in smuggling contraband into prison.
“An officer from this service was taken into police custody with drugs,” he said.
According to Ahmed, the officer was suspended following his arrest.
While Ahmed did not specify the quantity or type of drugs seized in the operation or the exact prison where the crime took place, a credible source confirms it took place at Maafushi Prison.
