Maldivian arrested with drugs worth over MVR 2M smuggled through post

A Maldivian man has been arrested as a suspect in connection to a large number of drugs smuggled into the Maldives worth over MVR 2 million via post.

Maldives Customs Service, in a statement on Thursday, said that the drugs were discovered amidst a search of packages brought to the Maldives from Netherlands via post in September.

Customs detailed that the drugs tested positive for ‘Mephedrone’ during the first phase of testing.

They said that the seized drugs weighed 1,008.86 grams – estimating its street value at MVR 2.5 million.

Customs noted that the seized drugs, and the suspect have been handed over to police. No further details regarding the suspect have been disclosed.

This is the third time ‘Mephedrone’ has been seized during attempts to smuggle the drug into the Maldives.

Party drugs such as ‘Mephedrone’ are now commonly used amongst Maldivian youths, for recreational purposes.
