MFDA issues warning over sale of expired basmati rice

Basmati rice.

Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued a warning over the sale of expired batches of the Al Qamar Gold Premium Aromatic White Basmati Rice.

MFDA said Tuesday that the issue was noticed in 5kg packets of the rice.

According to MFDA, an inspection uncovered the expiry dates of the packets had been altered, with a sticker with the wrong date pasted over the original expiry date.

Sale of expired food products will result in loss of safety and quality of food and endanger public health, warned MFDA.

MFDA ordered for a cease in import and distribution of expired food products.

It is unclear if the MFDA is investigating or has taken action against any seller found to have distributed the expired basmati rice.
