Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, former president Mohamed Nasheed is scheduled to depart on an official visit to the United States on Wednesday night, to partake in the ninth meeting of Finance Ministers of Climate Vulnerable 20 Countries (V20).
The ninth meeting of Finance Ministers of V20 nations will be held during the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in Washington, D.C., United States. The theme of the meeting is, ‘When is now?’.
Nasheed is participating in the meeting at the invitation of the current Chair of V20, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning of Ghana Kenneth Ofori-Atta.
During this visit, Nasheed will also meet senior officials from the IMF, World Bank and V20 nations.
Speaking regarding his visit, Nasheed underscored that the economies of many nations have been majorly impacted recently, which international financial institutions need to deeply consider.
“Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) believes that almost 20 nations included in the forum will face economic downturns within the next two years, some of them to the extent of sovereign default,” he had said.
Therewith, Nasheed said that financial institutions will discuss the issue at CVF, and initiate efforts to implement solutions. He added that CVF will bare the expenses of his visit.
Nasheed is set to conclude the visit on Sunday, October 16, 2022.
The CVF is an international forum for countries most threatened by climate change. Composed of 55 members from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific, including the Maldives, it represents some 1.4 billion people worldwide.
