A man detained at Maafushi Prison pending the outcome of his trial has passed away on Thursday evening.

Maldives Correctional Service identified the deceased as Mohamed Nasheed, 43, Hudhufinfenmaage, M. Muli.

Corrections detailed that one of Nasheed’s cellmates informed a prison officer that he was not breathing upon which Nasheed was immediately taken to Maafushi Prison’s medical centre and given CPR.

However, as he did not breathe even after CPR, Corrections said that Nasheed was declared dead at approximately 17:26pm in the evening.

Corrections said that Nasheed was a detainee who has been remanded in custody pending the outcome of his trial in a drug-related case.

“We immediately informed of Mohamed Nasheed’s death to his family, Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and National Integrity Commission,” they added.
