Tourist arrivals drop, first time compared to same period last year

The number of tourists that visited Maldives dropped for the first time in August, compared to the same period of the previous year.

According to the tourism statistics publicized by the Ministry of Tourism, in August 2022, a total of 131,863 visited, meanwhile last year, only 143,599 came in 2021.

This marks the first instance the number has dropped compared to the same period last year.

So far this year 1.07 million tourists visited. In comparison, the same period last year saw only 755,966 people visiting Maldives. The year prior to that – 2019 had 1.13 million tourists visiting by August.

Looking at where the visitors came from, India has led by making up 14.2 percent of the arrivals till August.

After the Russia-Ukrain war, the arrivals from Russia have been picking up, and made up 11.4 percent of the market and is second on the list.

With 11.4 percent, the United Kingdom is fourth in the highest number of tourists visiting until August.

In August 2022, on average 4,254 tourists came to Maldives every day. The visitors spend an average of 8.3 days in the country.
