Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), on Sunday, has stated that its goal is to secure 25,000 members for the party before the end of the year.

Speaking to Sun, MDA’s Policy and Development Council’s President Shuaib Ali said that the party had only 7,000 members when they kicked off a campaign to increase membership. Since then, he noted that the membership of the party has increased to 15,000.

“Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 people are required when facing next year’s election. President Ahmed Siyam Mohamed believes that 50,000 people can be reached based on the political arena. Even though signed forms for membership of the party are sent to EC, it takes days for the registration to be complete,” he had said.

Speaking regarding the current activities by MDA, Shuhaib said that the membership campaign launched at Fuvahmulah City four months ago had been very successful. In this regard, he noted that a main centre of the party has now been established in the city.

“MDA’s leadership very recently undertook a visit to Fuvahmulah City. During this trip, the operations of the party’s main centre was strengthened and strategic committees were formed under the leadership’s oversight,” he had said.

Shuaib said that many residents of Fuvahmulah City, including big families, support securing the presidency of Maldives to MDA’s president Siyam.

“Major political families in the Maldives have joined MDA, and together with them, efforts to secure presidency for Siyam are underway. The problems Maldives is currently facing are seen by them. Nevertheless, without consideration of the events of the past, efforts are underway to make Siyam the president. One of the most important initiatives under this is to strengthen our party’s membership,” he had said.

Shuaib said that efforts were also underway to establish main centres of MDA across major cities in the Maldives apart from Fuvahmulah City. On this note, he said that the centre being developed in Male’ City will be inaugurated by the end of this year.

He added that MDA receives the most support from Fuvahmulah City, Male’ City, Noonu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll.

Speaking further, Shuaib said that the Maldivian people currently want a leader that has a clean slate and has not benefited from any government monies. He cited this to be the reason why support for Siyam has increased, as well as MDA’s membership.

Shuaib said that MDA’s president is a revolutionary president, which Siyam continues to always prove in different ways.

“Siyam always says that being political does not mean being personal. That it is serving the people. In the future, the nation will be shaped that way,” he added,

Shuaib said that Siyam who has been serving the people of Maldives as a successful businessperson – can only further these efforts by becoming the president.
