Mayoral candidate Al-Ustaz Abdulla Mahzoom Majid says he is contesting the Male' City mayoral race to address long-standing problems and improve everyday living conditions.
Mahzoom, who previously served as Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs, said the city’s biggest challenge is not a lack of resources, but weak management caused by corruption.
He described the current political system as one where votes are bought and sold, and said key responsibilities are being handed to politically connected individuals rather than those with merit.
“As mayor, I will focus on solving age-old practical problems and improving daily life,” he said.
Mahzoom said the city needs creativity, breathing space, and opportunities, and pledged to redesign streets, improve traffic flow, rebuild parking areas, and reduce congestion if elected.
He said the mayor’s role is to ensure safety, create opportunities, and improve administrative services for all residents.

If elected, Mahzoom said he would work to connect talented individuals to markets and customers, helping grow small businesses, content creators, and entrepreneurs, boosting the city’s productivity.
He also pledged to install clean, well-maintained public toilets and create inclusive public spaces where people of all ages can gather, relax, and connect.
Mahzoom said corruption and slander have made the city difficult to live in, but he is running to change that and improve both business and living conditions.
“The city needs new energy, young blood, innovative ideas, and a brave, honest leader who’s not afraid to work for the people. We have space. We have talent. We can improve our local economy and quality of life,” he said.
Mahzoom completed his A Levels at Villa International High School, and graduated with Honors in Law from the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). He passed his first bar exam in the Maldives on November 19, 2022, and became a licensed lawyer on November 17, 2023.
After resigning as Deputy Minister, Mahzoom has been vocal on youth-related issues. He currently runs his own law firm, serves as Legal Head of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and is a member of the party’s national assembly.
