The Parliamentary Behavioural Committee has passed, at a meeting held today, to submit a case to the Police on the damage caused to Parliament property on 19 March 2012.
The case, on the damage caused during the unrest by MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on the day the President delivered the Presidential Address, was proposed by Galolhu-dhekunu MP Ahmed Mahloof, and supported by Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdullah.
Five out of ten members present at today’s Committee meeting voted in favour of submitting the case to the Police. Committee Chairman Hanimaadhoo MP Mohamed Mujthaz did not participate in the vote.
Committee members of MDP proposed that no motions should be passed by the Committee until the regulation on behavioural issues of MPs is passed by the Parliament. This was proposed by Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Eesa, and supported by Mahibadhoo MP Rugiyya Mohamed.
This proposition was voted in favour by four MPs, including independent member Velidhoo MP Ali Mohamed.
Several MPs gathered at the meeting room once the Committee commenced their debate on this issue, which resulted in heated discussions.
The Parliament has informed that on the day in question, damage was caused to desks, touch screens, 15 name boards, mic systems, administrative desks and voting cards in the Parliament chamber.
