Supreme Court Assistant Registrar dismissed against the law: Employment Tribunal

The Employment Tribunal has decided that Assistant Registrar Fathimath Latheef of Karankaage, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, was dismissed from her post against the law.

Fathimath Latheef was dismissed following a letter she sent to Supreme Court, in protest of a ruling by the Court that the responsibilities of the Registrar must be carried out by the Secretary General.

Consequently, the Supreme Court had warned her in writing that such acts should not be repeated and reminded her to respect the judicial sector employee regulations.

The Employment Tribunal said in its decision that this warning by the Supreme Court is void. The Council that probed the case decided that Fathimath Latheef was dismissed against the judicial sector employee regulations.

Instead of requesting to be reinstated to her position, Fathimath Latheef had requested for her salary up to the day that a decision is made on the case. The Employment Tribunal has ordered to pay her MVR248,334.27 within ten days, and to inform the Tribunal once the payment is made.

The Tribunal also reminded the Department of Judicial Administration to work within the laws and regulations on issues related to employees and salaries.
