Hoadehdhoo Council: Terminate contract if not developing Hoadehdhoo fish factory

Gdh. Hoadehdhoo

The Council of Gaafu Dhaal Atoll called to terminate the agreement signed in 2005 with Horizon Fisheries Complex to build a fish factory on G.Dh Hoadehdhoo, as the project has yet to be completed.

The council asked to terminate the agreement that granted over 13 hectares of land to the company in order to develop and operate the factory.

This statement was made in a regulation issued by the atoll council regarding the issue.

Speaking about this to Sun, atoll council member and President of Thinadhoo Council Saud Ali said that the regulation was aimed to change the status of the project that has yet to commence.

As per the regulation, with fishing rates being high in the region, and Kooddoo being the only option to weigh fish posed difficulties to fishermen.

Furthermore, it read that fishermen of the region have been wistfully longing for the day the unfinished fish factory is completed and opened to provide solutions to their hardships in weighing fish.

“It is an injustice to the fishermen that even after 16 years, Huvadhoo Fisheries Complex is not operational.”

Additionally, the regulation expressed the council members’ belief that if the fisheries complex in Hoadehdhoo is made operational, it would solve the issues faced by fishermen in fish weighing in a short period of time.

The project was awarded to Horizon Fisheries by the government on December 8, 2005.
