Vice President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC), Mohamed Shaheeb, has been elected as the President of the MBC.
The post of President of MBC has been vacant since the resignation of its former President Badr Naseer on 29 July 2012.
Shaheeb was elected with the votes of four out of six members of the Commission, at a meeting held today.
At today’s meeting, Commission member Abdullah Sujau was elected as Vice President of the Commission as well. Sujau for Vice President was also voted in favour by four out of six members.
MBC said that only Shaheeb and Sujau expressed interest to become the Commission President and Vice President respectively.
Shaheeb’s election comes before the Parliament elected a person to the post of MBC President. Fourteen persons lodged applications for this post, and the names have been forwarded to the Parliament by the President’s Office.
The Broadcasting Law states that vacant MBC-member positions should be filled within sixty days.
