State-owned enterprise on agriculture, Agro National Corporation (AgroNAT), has begun releasing watermelon in large quantities for the market in a move to decrease prices.
The company detailed that five tons of watermelons were released to the market on the first day of Ramadan; 1.5 tons on the second day of Ramadan and three tons on third day of Ramadan.
AgroNAT added that released of additional 10 tons of watermelons to the market is currently planned.
They further noted of plans to release a total of 117 tons of watermelons to the market within the duration of Ramadan, on different days.
AgroNAT said that the decision to farm watermelon in large quantities and release them to the market in conjunction with the month of Ramadan was made over increased complaints from the public regarding raise in prices of food products such as watermelons during Ramadan of every year.
They also underscored that the increase in the production of agricultural products have aided in controlling market prices of things such as watermelon during this Ramadan.
The release of additional agricultural products to the market such as pumpkin, gourds, cucumber, papaya, coconut and greens throughout Ramadan is also planned by AgroNat.
They stressed their aim to be ensuring the availability of such products in the market throughout the month of Ramadan across the country, at a fair price.
