Minister Dhiyana dismissed

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has dismissed Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed from her post.

Press Secretary at the President’s Office Masood Imad said that she was dismissed because she acted in a manner not suited for a Minister.

In a letter forwarded to Dhiyana today, President Waheed expressed gratitude for the services rendered during her tenure as the Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights.

Dhiyana strongly criticised the President and the government following the arrest of her husband, Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir, over suspicions of drinking alcohol.

At press conference held by Dhiyana and her husband yesterday, Dhiyana showed the media how her husband was beaten by the Police. She spoke emotionally about the incident, and said that Jabir’s arrest was politically motivated.

Dhiyana served as Attorney General in former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government, but was dismissed following opinion differences with Nasheed. She was later appointed as the SAARC Secretary General, but criticised the government for the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed, and resigned.
