Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA) has called to expedite addressing the concerns raised by taxi drivers subsequent to the recent hike in fuel prices.

The timeframe given by taxi centers for Transport Ministry to increase the price of taxi fares as proposed by them, had expired yesterday.

Subsequently, taxi centers have been protesting since yesterday afternoon.

In a statement released by MDA over the matter today, the party stressed that as a large percentage of the local population lives in Male’ area, taxi services are sought by thousands of people every day.

Noting that the hike in fuel prices will negatively impact many families which rely on income earned through taxiing, MDA said that it is their utmost request that arrangements are made in a manner it does not pose difficulties to the drivers and the public.

The party also urged to opt for discussions regarding the matter, and protect the interests of service providers and service users.

As Transport Ministry had failed to raise the price of taxi fares as requested, many taxi centers have halted taxiing yesterday.

Taxi centers had been shut down, whereas taxi mobile applications had also been downed.

However, taxi centers noted that each center will be operating two cars for free, for emergency situations.
