Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has urged members of opposition coalition to not take part in the activities carried out under the ‘India Out’ campaign, spearheaded by opposition leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

Members of opposition coalition depart to ADh. Mahibadhoo today, to take part in a rally held on the island as part of the opposition coalition’s ‘India Out’ campaign.

In a tweet made by Nasheed in reference to the event today, he said that there is no support for the ‘India Out’ campaign. He urged members of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to not take part in the opposition coalition’s activities for the sake of the country, citing it to be detrimental for the Maldives.

The opposition’s ‘India Out’ campaign claims that Indian military personnel being stationed in the Maldives is a threat to the country’s national security. They also claim it to be a concern of many Maldivian citizens.

Yameen, who heads the campaign, has previously stated that Maldivian military has no jurisdiction over the areas Indian military personnel are stationed at. He also urged to create opportunities to ‘politicize’ Maldivian military.

‘India Out’ campaign by the opposition coalition has been expanded to atolls. Within in last month, events under the campaign were organized at Addu City, Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Raa Atoll.
